European Roulette
The European Roulette wheel has thirty-seven numbered pockets from zero to thirty six. It’s also known as “single zero roulette”. The pockets are in different colors; black, red and the zero is a green pocket. You bet on which pocket the ball will come to rest after a spin of the wheel. You are allowed to bet on any number and any combination of numbers. You can also bet on red or black and even or odd numbers.
The roulette table consists of outside and inside betting fields in which you can place your inside or outside bets. For each roulette table there are maximum and minimum limits. Once you’ve placed your bet and the wheel starts spinning, you cannot change your bet.
Inside Bets
There are different choices and combinations for inside bets. You can bet on a single number with a payout of 35 to 1, or you can bet on two pockets with a payout of 17 to 1. These bets are called straight up bet (one number) and split bet (two numbers). If you bet on three numbers on a particular row you get a payout of 11 to 1, this is called a street bet. A line bet is when you place two street bet, this gives you a payout of 5 to 1. A corner bet is to bet on any of the four adjacent squares and provides you with a payout of 8 to 1.
Outside Bets
A dozens bet engulfs three squares from combinations of 1 to 12, 13 to 24 and 25 to 36. The payoff is 2 to 1. A High and Low bet cover two squares of the bottom half of numbers with a payout of 1 to 1. The numbers could be between 1 to 18 and 19 to 35. You can also bet on odd or even numbers, and black or red pockets, these options both give you the same payout as a High and Low bet (1 to 1).
American Roulette
American roulette rules are very similar to European roulette rules. The big difference between American Roulette and European Roulette is that the American version has both 0 and 00 whilst the European Roulette has only the single zero. That’s why the American Roulette is often called “double zero roulette wheel”, and the European Roulette the “single zero roulette wheel”.
American Roulette vs European Roulette
With the double zero the American Roulette has 28 slots instead of the single zero-version’s 37 slots. This actually makes a big difference, with a double zero the house has an 5,26 percent edge against the player. This is a big difference to the 2,70 percent edge it has with the European version.
In many European casinos there’s also the possibility to use the prison rule. This rule allows the player, if the zero comes up, to either surrender one half of his/hers outside wagers or to leave them for the next game. This takes the house’s edge down to only a 1,352 percent edge. This is clearly a lot less than the 5,26 percent house edge in the American Roulette.
If you visit a land based casino, it won’t be hard to tell the difference between an American Roulette table and a European Roulette table. The European Roulette table is bigger and therefore the croupier has to use a use a rake to clear out the bets and pay out the winnings.
In conclusion, both games are very popular and pretty much alike. But because of the added double zero in the American roulette, it's much more profitable to play roulette the European way from a players point of view.
